To sharpen, you’ll need a set square and a file.
- Set squares allow you to sharpen edges at angles of 85° to 90°.
- The smaller the angle, the sharper the edge will be.
- It is common to sharpen at 87 or 88° for technical disciplines and 88 or 89° for speed disciplines.
- There are two types of angle gauge: with or without a thumb wheel.
The angle gauge with a thumb wheel provides a better grip on the file.
- We stock a wide range of files. It’s up to you to try them out and decide which you prefer.
- Generally speaking, opt for a 150mm file if your equipment is maintained regularly, and a 200mm file if the work is more substantial.
Place your equipment on its side and secure it with the vices.
The clamps should face you.
Select a set square with the desired angle and position the file at an angle.
Press the set square against the base and the file against the edge.
Pull the tool towards you, applying gentle pressure.
Make 4 passes along the entire length of the edge.
Be careful not to apply pressure as you move the tool back; only apply pressure as you pull the tool towards you.
Your edges are now sharpened.
