When your equipment is new, you must lay the base flat.
Place your equipment horizontally in the vices.
Place a planimeter on the base plate and then position a light source behind it.
Case 1: if light shines through at the outer edges, this means your base is warped.
Your edges are no longer effective. If the base is too cambered (showing “> 1mm” in the video), take your equipment to the shop to have it run through the machine.
Otherwise, take a metal scraper and scrape the base in the direction of travel to remove some material.
Case 2: If a gap forms in the centre of your base, it means it’s warped. Your glide performance is poor.
Take a 200-grit file. Place it flat and press down on the edges at the warped areas to bring them down to the same level as the base.
Remove the filings between each pass using a brush.
Case 3: if no gap appears, the base is flat. You need to lower the edges using a base edge file.
It is common to lower the edges by 0.25° for slalom, 1° for giant slalom and 1.5° for speed events.
Place the tool on the edge. Make 2–3 passes, applying light pressure. Remove the metal shavings between each pass using a brush.
Carry out a final check along the entire length using the planimeter.
Your base is ready.
